Wait, I thought this would be your third too…? Or did you chaperone last year too and I had no fucking idea?
No….I went to prom last year with Taylor…when we dated…don’t you remember?
Well, I’ll take that. My third prom should be the best prom I’ve ever had.
This is my forth prom…
No….But, I was just making sure you weren’t going to be listening to what the people at the school want you to be doing.
I’ll definitely be more lenient than most.
So does that mean I can get away with more shit since you’re my brother…? Or are you going to be a buzz kill? I need to prepare for this.
Have I ever been a buzz kill?
Irina bit her lip and looked at her husband curiously, he was holding something back and she knew it. She always knew when Parker was trying to be sneaky about something and he was totally trying to be sneaky right then. It was too bad for him that he was like reading an open book; Irina just knew him too well. And then he gave it up like she knew he would. Open book. “I think this is as close to actual prom as I can get… so yes, of course, Parker. I would love to go be prom chaperones with you.” she nodded, reaching forward with both hands to grip his face; leaning in to press a kiss to his lips.
“I am thinking they would, is not like we will break up close dancing. We will have to take care not to dance too close ourselves…” she laughed lightly, giving him a wink. It was short notice, she didn’t really have a proper dress, but she did have shared appointments for the beauty treatments with the girls in the morning and she had seen a few pretty dresses in the shops they’d been in. She could pull it off. It was just like Parker to try and give her all the things he knew she’d never had in her life before him, it was like he had a sixth sense when it came to her and always knew exactly how to put a smile on her face.
He kissed her back and smiled at her. He was going to give her a prom to remember. Sure, he had been to three in his life, including last year’s, but this time around it would be different. Why? Because he was going with the love of his life. It had nothing to do with the fact that they were going as chaperones either. That wasn’t important. Sure, he would have to make sure there was nothing weird going on, but he generally trusted the majority of the kids going. It would be weird to see his sisters dancing super close to guys, but he was pretty sure both Penny and Hanna were sleeping with their boyfriends. Which, kinda freaked him out, but he tried to be the cool older brother.
He laughed and shook his head. “Yeah, definitely not. I think there is going to be another couple there. But younger like us. So hopefully the kids will have fun.” Parker felt weird saying ‘kids.’ He wasn’t much older than the students attending prom and neither was Irina. “So, I will need to rent a tux. And you’ll need to get a dress…sorry it’s last minute but I figure with our money we can make it happen,” he told her. Parker leaned over and kissed her once more before standing and pulling the guitar off of his shoulders and laying it down on the coffee table. “See, I still have some surprises left in me…”
Irina had taken Penny and Spencer shopping for their Prom finery several times the past week. It had been fun to shop for something other than maternity clothes and baby stuff, as much as she enjoyed that; sometimes she liked to just be girly and not the adult mommy to be. Not that there was really any hiding that anymore, her baby bump was now quite noticeable and that didn’t really bother her, she kind of liked it, but it had taken a little getting used to. She’d helped the girls pick out their dresses, shoes and accessories, it was a lot of fun - but she had to admit she envied them a little. Irina had never finished school, so she’d never attended a single school dance. She’d just have to live vicariously through her sister in law and her best friend and that was okay with her; she already had everything in life she could have ever hoped for, so she didn’t have an American prom, she had Parker, a beautiful home, good friends and the two little lives growing inside her; pretty good for a Russian runaway.
She’d made appointments for the girls to get their hair done and mani-pedis in the morning, and tonight the furthest thing from Irina’s mind was prom. Irina was lounging on the couch with her laptop and her study books studying and taking sample tests to prepare for her GED. Sure she had more money than she could possibly ever spend in her lifetime, but that didn’t mean she didn’t long for an education. Her eyes flicked up as her husband entered the room; a brow quirked as he took a seat on the coffee table with his guitar - giving him a disapproving look for using the table as a bench. Her head cocked slightly to the left as he strummed the guitar and sang to her the altered lyrics to a song that Penny had been playing on repeat for the past week and a half; a little smile playing on her lips as she took the rose from her husband’s hand. “Is sweet idea, Parker… but you are not high school boy last time I checked…”
Parker had a feeling that she would say something like that. But he just shrugged his shoulders and leaned over to kiss her. “So yes or no?” he asked her. Parker was trying not to show any emotion on his face but he couldn’t help it. His face tended to give away everything really easily. It was one of those things about him. Sure, he could lie his ass off to his mom when he needed to, but when it was something important, there was no way he could keep it from her or his family. “Okay, so truth time…the school asked us to chaperone the prom. And I thought we could do it up right. Ya know, fancy clothes, corsage, nice restaurant…I know it’s not like a real prom but it kind of is…right?” he asked her, begging her with his eyes.
All he ever wanted was to make her happy. Parker would go through hell or high water to make Irina smile. And he wanted her to have a normal life in America. He wanted her to feel like she fit in. No, he didn’t want her to lose her heritage or anything that made her who she was. Sure, he would erase some things from her past if he could, but it was the past and he loved her despite of and because of it. That’s just how things work in a relationship. It was give and take and Parker liked to give more than take. It was his nature. “Plus, I already told the school we would do it. I figured Penny and Brad would like us as chaperones better than Mom and Dad or some other old couple.”
Parker had gotten a call early that week about being a prom chaperone. He was an alumni of the school, left in good standing and was now one of the wealthiest men on the lane. Of course, his money came from Irina, but still. The school also figured that since he was a married man with kids on the way, he would be more responsible. That was probably true. Well, maybe. Parker had agreed to it and said he would be there with his wife. But the problem was it was Thursday and he still hadn’t asked Irina. This was kind of daunting for him. With Taylor, they had been dating and it was just assumed. He didn’t go all out or fancy. Okay, he bought her a rose and did something kind of corny to ask her, but with Irina it had to be good. It would be her first real prom and he wanted to make it special for her.
The man had decided to do it in a quirky song. He was always so goofy and silly. He figured it was the best thing to do. He saw her lounging on the couch and the man walked in, guitar in hand. He was only going to play a quick little melody to go with his song. Parker sat on the coffee table in front of her, perfectly aware that she wouldn’t be happy with him for doing that. “Hey we are married, and this is crazy, but here’s a rose, so prom maybe?” he sang before grabbing a rose and handing it to her.
Dude, what do you think about playing some L4D with me later?
I’m totally game. Hell yes!
